Will an abortion affect my health?

There are many myths out there about abortion. The licensed staff at EMW Women’s Surgical can give you accurate information about any concerns you have.

Is abortion safe?

When performed by an experienced Physician, abortion is a very safe medical procedure. At EMW Women’s Surgical Center our Board Certified OB/GYN’s perform the procedure. According to the National Abortion Federation, less than 0.5% of women experience major complications from a surgical abortion, which makes it 8-10 times safer than carrying a pregnancy to term. It is also the most frequently performed surgery in the United States. Our staff is trained to offer the highest standard of medical care available. Both abortion pill and surgical termination methods are very safe.

Will abortion affect my ability to have children in the future?

There is no evidence that having an abortion under safe and legal circumstances has any effect on future pregnancies or to your overall health. The possible risks involved with abortion surgery are very minimal. It’s possible to get pregnant quickly after you have an abortion. So, it’s a good idea to discuss a birth control plan for after your abortion.

Will having an abortion increase risk of breast cancer?

Having an abortion does not increase your risk for breast cancer. Exhaustive reviews by panels convened by the US and UK governments have concluded that there is no association between abortion and breast cancer. There is also no indication that abortion is a risk factor for other cancers.

Will having an abortion cause depression or mental health issues?

Having an abortion does not cause depression or mental health issues.

Leading experts have concluded that among women who have an unplanned pregnancy, the risk of mental health problems is no greater if they have a single first trimester abortion than if they carry the pregnancy to term. It’s totally normal to have a lot of different emotions after your abortion.

Everyone’s experience is different, and there’s no “right” or “wrong” way to feel. Most people are relieved and don’t regret their decision. A few may feel sadness, guilt, or regret after an abortion. Lots of people have all these feelings at different times. These feelings aren’t unique to having an abortion. People feel many different emotions after giving birth, too. Serious, long-term emotional problems after an abortion are rare.

Women denied abortions are:

More likely to experience serious complications from the end of pregnancy including eclampsia and death.
More likely to stay tethered to abusive partners.
More likely to suffer anxiety and loss of self-esteem in the short term after being denied abortion.
Less likely to have aspirational life plans for the coming year.
More likely to experience poor physical health for years after the pregnancy, both associated and unassociated with childbirth.
More likely to face immediate and lasting financial hardship.
The study finds that being denied an abortion has serious implications for the children born of unwanted pregnancy, as well as for the existing children in the family.
More likely to be raising the resulting children by themselves after 5 years.

Do all religions and religious people oppose a woman’s right to choose?

Many religious and spiritual organizations respect a woman’s right to choose and are pro-choice because of their religious beliefs.

Majorities across most religious traditions say that abortion should be legal in all or most cases, including Unitarian Universalists (93%) Jewish Americans (81%), Buddhists (79%), other Catholics of color (73%), Black Protestants (71%), white mainline/non-evangelical Protestants (68%), white Catholics (62%), Muslims (62%), Hispanic Catholics (57%), and other Protestants of color (52%).

Can a medical abortion be reversed?

In 2019, the Kentucky State legislature passed a medical abortion reversal law. This law requires physicians in Kentucky to inform patients that a medical abortion has the potential to be reversed. The American Medical Association and the American College of Obstetrician Gynecologists oppose medical abortion reversal laws. These leading authorities on health care state that the treatment is not based on science and does not meet clinical standards. AMA President Patrice A. Harris told the Washington Post that these laws compel physicians and other members of the health care team to provide patients with false or misleading information that is not based on any scientific evidence.
